Walter Tevis (1928–1984) wrote across genres with rare quality: the aching alien-among-us novel The Man Who Fell to Earth, the elegant robot-and-decline dystopia Mockingbird, and, beyond SF, The Hustler and The Queen’s Gambit. His spare, melancholy science fiction is among the most literary the field has produced.
