Richard McKenna (1913–1964) spent 22 years in the Navy before the best-selling novel The Sand Pebbles made his name. He came late and brilliantly to science fiction: ‘Casey Agonistes’ and the posthumously published ‘The Secret Place’ (a Nebula winner) are subtle, deeply felt stories that hinted at a major genre talent cut short by his sudden early death. A small body of exceptional work.
