Raymond A. Palmer (1910–1977) was one of science fiction’s great showmen, editor of Amazing Stories from 1938, he boosted circulation with sensational stories and, notoriously, promoted Richard Shaver’s ‘true’ tales of malevolent underground beings as fact. He went on to co-found Fate and pioneer the flying-saucer and paranormal magazine boom. A pulp writer himself, his real genius was for provocation and myth-making.
