Morgan Robertson (1861–1915) was a former sailor turned popular author of nautical fiction whose novella Futility, or the Wreck of the Titan (1898) described a supposedly unsinkable liner striking an iceberg and sinking with great loss of life, fourteen years before the Titanic did almost exactly that. Several of his stories anticipated later technology, giving him a lasting reputation for prescience.
