Maurice Leblanc (1864–1941) created Arsène Lupin, the dashing gentleman-burglar whose adventures made him a French national icon. Several Lupin novels edge into science fiction and the fantastic, lost civilisations, wondrous devices and secret powers, reflecting the era’s appetite for the marvellous within popular crime fiction.
