J. D. Beresford (1873–1947) wrote The Hampdenshire Wonder (1911), a serious and moving early novel about a child of vast, alien intellect misunderstood by the ordinary world, a foundational treatment of the ‘superman’ theme that influenced Stapledon and beyond. A respected mainstream novelist and admirer of Wells, he brought real literary weight to early British science fiction.
