Harlan Ellison (1934–2018) was a force of nature: author of blistering stories like ‘“Repent, Harlequin!” Said the Ticktockman’ and ‘I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream’, editor of the field-changing Dangerous Visions anthologies that ignited the American New Wave, and writer of the classic Star Trek episode ‘The City on the Edge of Forever’. Winner of more Hugos, Nebulas and Edgars than almost anyone, famously litigious and pugnacious, he made short fiction feel urgent and dangerous.
