Gordon R. Dickson (1923–2001) was a hugely productive and popular writer whose central work, the ‘Childe Cycle’, centres on the Dorsai, a culture of superb professional soldiers, and traces humanity’s evolution toward a fuller ethical maturity. A multiple Hugo and Nebula winner (‘Soldier, Ask Not’, ‘Lost Dorsai’), he also wrote warm comic fantasy like The Dragon and the George. A fixture of the field and a past president of the SFWA.
