Garrett P. Serviss (1851–1929) was a New York Sun journalist who became one of America’s great popularisers of astronomy, the lecturer of the Urania series and author of many accessible science books. In fiction he is remembered for ‘Edison’s Conquest of Mars’ (1898), an unauthorised sequel to Wells that sent human fleets to attack Mars, plus novels like The Moon Metal and A Columbus of Space. A genuine pioneer of American science fiction.
