William Clark Russell (1844–1911) was the most celebrated writer of nautical fiction of his generation. Among his many sea-novels is The Death Ship, a full-length treatment of the Flying Dutchman legend, and other tales edged with the supernatural. His authentic, atmospheric sea-writing carried the ghostly maritime tradition into the popular novel.
