Arthur Machen (1863–1947) was a central figure of the fin-de-siècle weird tale. ‘The Great God Pan’ and ‘The White People’ evoke a numinous, sometimes malignant reality lurking beneath the ordinary world, and ‘The Bowmen’ accidentally spawned the ‘Angels of Mons’ legend. A deep influence on H. P. Lovecraft and the whole cosmic-horror tradition, his mystical dread and luminous prose remain widely admired.
