T. L. Sherred (1915–1985) wrote comparatively little, but his novella ‘E for Effort’ (1947), about a device that can film any moment of the past, and the political catastrophe that follows, is one of the most admired stories of its era, a bleak, brilliant meditation on truth and power. A small body of work punching far above its weight.
