Dame Rose Macaulay (1881–1958) was a celebrated English novelist and essayist whose What Not (1918) imagines a future government attempting to breed a more intelligent population through a ‘Ministry of Brains’, a witty, prescient dystopia written just before, and thought to have influenced, Huxley’s Brave New World.
