John Jakes (1932–2023) became famous for the blockbuster ‘Kent Family Chronicles’ and the North and South Civil War saga, but he served a long apprenticeship in science fiction and fantasy from the 1950s. He created the sardonic sword-and-sorcery anti-hero Brak the Barbarian and wrote much lively pulp SF before history made him a household name. A consummate popular storyteller across genres.
