Harold L. Goodwin (1914–1990) led a double life: by day a senior U.S. government science official, atomic-test operations, a NASA administrator’s assistant, deputy director of the Sea Grant program, and by pen ‘John Blaine’, author of the long-running Rick Brant ‘science-adventure’ books that sent a generation of young readers toward careers in science. He also wrote popular space-science books under his own name.
