E. R. Eddison (1882–1945) wrote The Worm Ouroboros (1922), a sumptuous heroic fantasy in gorgeous archaic prose, and the philosophically ambitious ‘Zimiamvian’ trilogy. Admired by Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, his richly imagined worlds and grand style make him one of the foundational authors of modern high fantasy.
