Christoph Martin Wieland (1733–1813) was a major German Enlightenment writer whose verse romance Oberon and collections of fairy tales (Dschinnistan, a source for The Magic Flute) helped establish the literary fairy tale in German. His witty, imaginative fantasies are an important root of the tradition.
