Valery Bryusov (1873–1924) was a central figure of Russian Symbolism, and among his fiction are striking works of the fantastic and science-fictional, ‘The Republic of the Southern Cross’, a chilling tale of a polar city gripped by a madness epidemic, is his best-known genre piece. His cerebral, cosmopolitan imagination places him among the notable Russian ancestors of the genre.
