Théophile Gautier (1811–1872) was a leading French Romantic, a poet and critic whose ‘art for art’s sake’ credo shaped a generation. His fantastic tales, the mummy-romance ‘The Mummy’s Foot’, the vampire story ‘La Morte Amoureuse’, the hashish-dream ‘The Club of Hashish-Eaters’, are exquisitely crafted works of the supernatural imagination, admired for their sensuous style and dreamlike invention.
