Maurice Renard (1875–1939) was a leading French writer of what he called the ‘merveilleux scientifique’, scientific-marvel fiction. The Hands of Orlac, in which a pianist receives a murderer’s transplanted hands, became a much-filmed horror classic, and Doctor Lerne and The Blue Peril show his inventive engagement with science. A major figure in the French ancestry of science fiction.
