Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888) is beloved for Little Women, but under pseudonyms and anonymously she also wrote lurid ‘sensation’ stories full of hashish, mesmerism, revenge and the supernatural, rediscovered in modern times as a fascinating counter-current to her wholesome fame. Tales like ‘Lost in a Pyramid; or, The Mummy’s Curse’ mark her as an unexpected contributor to Gothic and fantastic fiction.
