Leopoldo Lugones (1874–1938), a towering figure of Argentine literature, wrote Las fuerzas extrañas (Strange Forces, 1906), a collection of science-fiction and horror tales, alchemists, cosmic catastrophe, strange science, that stands at the fountainhead of Latin American speculative fiction and directly influenced Borges.
