General Sir George Tomkyns Chesney (1830–1895) wrote ‘The Battle of Dorking’ (1871), a vivid account of a successful German invasion of an unprepared Britain that caused a national sensation and founded the ‘invasion-scare’ and future-war genre. Its imitators filled the decades before 1914, and its influence runs directly to the war-anticipation strand of science fiction.
