Mór Jókai (1825–1904) was the towering figure of nineteenth-century Hungarian literature, astonishingly prolific and hugely popular. Among his hundreds of works is the visionary The Novel of the Next Century, which imagines future technologies, flying machines, new energy sources, a transformed geopolitics, making him a significant, if little-known outside Hungary, ancestor of science fiction in Central Europe.
