Fredric Brown (1906–1972) was beloved in both science fiction and mystery for his ingenuity, humour and command of the sting-in-the-tail short story. ‘Arena’ (filmed for Star Trek), the novel What Mad Universe, and dozens of miniature masterpieces like ‘Answer’ show a writer who could turn an idea on a single sentence. Few have matched him at the science-fiction joke or the compressed shock ending.
