Edward S. Ellis (1840–1916) was an astonishingly prolific author of dime novels whose The Steam Man of the Prairies (1868), featuring a steam-powered mechanical man hauling a wagon across the West, is a foundational ‘Edisonade’ and a direct ancestor of the Frank Reade invention stories. A key figure in the prehistory of American science fiction.
