Charles Kingsley (1819–1875) was a clergyman, historian and novelist whose The Water-Babies (1863), the tale of a chimney-sweep who becomes an aquatic ‘water-baby’, is a beloved and eccentric Victorian children’s fantasy, blending fairy tale, moral instruction and a spirited engagement with the new science of evolution. A distinctive fusion of wonder and Victorian ideas.
