Dwight V. Swain (1915–1992) wrote briskly entertaining science fiction and fantasy for the 1940s–50s pulps such as Amazing and Imagination. He is remembered even more, though, as a teacher: his University of Oklahoma professional-writing courses and his book Techniques of the Selling Writer, origin of the famous ‘scene and sequel’ and ‘motivation-reaction unit’ ideas, have trained generations of working writers.
