Thornton W. Burgess (1874–1965) wrote thousands of bedtime animal stories set in the ‘Green Meadows’ and ‘Green Forest’, teaching natural history through the adventures of Peter Rabbit, Reddy Fox, Jimmy Skunk and others. A conservationist as well, he was one of the most prolific and beloved American children’s authors of the early twentieth century.
