Manly Wade Wellman (1903–1986) drew deep on the folklore of the southern Appalachians to create some of American fantasy’s most distinctive work, above all the ‘Silver John’ stories, where a wandering balladeer meets the old magic of the hills. A prolific pulp contributor across science fiction, horror and mystery, and a serious regional historian, he won an Edgar and a World Fantasy Award and remains a touchstone for folk-horror.
