John D. MacDonald (1916–1986) became one of America’s finest crime novelists, creator of Travis McGee and author of The Executioners (filmed as Cape Fear), but he served a busy apprenticeship in the late-1940s and 1950s SF magazines, and wrote genre novels like Wine of the Dreamers and the classic Ballroom of the Skies. His hard, clean storytelling was honed in the pulps.
