Hope Mirrlees (1887–1978) wrote Lud-in-the-Mist (1926), a subtle, beautiful fantasy of a staid town on the border of Fairyland and the disruptive magic of ‘fairy fruit’, long neglected, now regarded as one of the finest of all fantasy novels and a key influence on later writers like Neil Gaiman. A singular, luminous achievement.
