H. R. Wakefield (1888–1964) was among the best English ghost-story writers after M. R. James, whose ‘The Red Lodge’, ‘The Cairn’ and ‘He Cometh and He Passeth By’ are anthology classics of quiet, mounting dread. He carried the antiquarian ghost-story tradition well into the modern era with skill and genuine chill.
