A. Hyatt Verrill (1871–1954) was a genuine explorer and naturalist, a prolific author of popular science and travel, who also wrote colourful scientifiction for Gernsback’s Amazing Stories in the late 1920s, drawing on his archaeological and natural-history knowledge for lost-race and future-science tales. His real-world expertise gave his adventure fiction unusual texture.
