H. Rider Haggard (1856–1925) all but invented the lost-world adventure with King Solomon’s Mines (1885) and its hero Allan Quatermain, then deepened it into myth with She (1887) and its immortal queen Ayesha. Drawing on his years in colonial Africa, his tales of hidden civilisations and ancient powers shaped pulp adventure and the fantastic-journey strand of science fiction for generations.
