Gustav Meyrink (1868–1932) was an Austrian writer steeped in occultism whose novel The Golem (1914), set in the dreamlike Jewish ghetto of Prague, is a landmark of supernatural and expressionist fiction, atmospheric, mystical and strange. The Green Face and Walpurgisnacht deepen his visionary blend of horror, esoterica and the uncanny.
