Francis Godwin (1562–1633), an English bishop, wrote The Man in the Moone (published 1638), in which the hero Domingo Gonsales is carried to the Moon by a flock of trained geese and finds a lunar civilisation. One of the earliest English-language interplanetary voyages, it influenced later Moon fictions and stands near the head of the genre’s ancestry.
