Ferdinand Raimund (1790–1836) was a master of the Viennese ‘Zauberposse’, the magical folk-comedy, whose enchanting plays The Girl from Fairyland (The Spendthrift), The King of the Alps and the Misanthrope, and The Peasant as Millionaire blend fairy-tale spirits, allegory and warmth. A defining figure of the German-language fantastic on the stage.
