Charles Nodier (1780–1844) was an influential French Romantic, librarian, lexicographer and host of a famous literary salon, whose fantastic and dream-haunted tales, such as ‘Smarra’ and ‘Trilby’, helped establish the conte fantastique in France. He was also an early popularizer of the vampire on the Parisian stage. A formative figure for later French fantasists.
