Wilhelm Hauff (1802–1827) packed a remarkable output into a life ended by illness at 24. His cycles of literary fairy tales, ‘The Caliph Stork’, ‘Dwarf Nose’, ‘The Cold Heart’, the framed ‘Caravan’ stories, remain classics of German children’s and fantastic literature, blending Oriental colour, wit and genuine strangeness. A brief but luminous Romantic career.
