Alfred Kubin (1877–1959) was a celebrated Austrian graphic artist whose only novel, The Other Side (1908), depicts a decaying ‘Dream Realm’ in Central Asia sliding into apocalyptic chaos, a hallucinatory, proto-surrealist fantasy that influenced Kafka and the whole tradition of dream-logic weird fiction. His own eerie illustrations complete its unsettling power.
