Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) all but invented the historical novel with Waverley and Ivanhoe, and his deep engagement with folklore and the supernatural runs through his work. ‘The Tapestried Chamber’ and ‘Wandering Willie’s Tale’ are classic ghost stories, and his Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft show a scholar’s fascination with the uncanny that fed the Romantic fantastic.
