W. W. Denslow (1856–1915) was the illustrator whose vivid drawings for L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) helped make it a phenomenon. After parting from Baum he produced his own illustrated children’s books and comics, and even a short-lived ‘Scarecrow and Tin-Man’ strip. A key figure in the visual birth of Oz.
