Richard Middleton (1882–1911) was a young English writer whose supernatural fiction, above all the charming, wistful ‘The Ghost Ship’, in which a phantom vessel lands in a Sussex village, is admired for its craft and imagination. His promising career ended in suicide at 29; his best weird tales endure.
