Mary De Morgan (1850–1907) wrote some of the most original literary fairy tales of the late-Victorian period, collected in On a Pincushion, The Necklace of Princess Fiorimonde and others, noted for their wit, moral edge and occasional darkness. Moving in Pre-Raphaelite and socialist circles (she read to William Morris’s children), she is increasingly valued as a distinctive fantasist.
