Joseph Conrad (1857–1924), the Polish-born master of English prose behind Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim, ventured occasionally into the speculative, notably The Inheritors, a novel of a coldly superior race from the ‘Fourth Dimension’ co-written with Ford Madox Ford, and the anarchist near-future anxieties of The Secret Agent. His moral depth influenced the more literary reaches of the genre.
