Hugh Lofting (1886–1947) created Doctor Dolittle, the kindly naturalist who learns to speak the languages of animals, in stories first written for his children from the trenches of the First World War. The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle won the Newbery Medal. A beloved and enduring, if later re-examined, corner of children’s fantasy.
