Howard Pyle (1853–1911) was a towering figure in American illustration and children’s literature. His The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood and his King Arthur volumes defined those legends for generations, and his pirate imagery created the popular look of buccaneers still with us. As founder of the ‘Brandywine School’ he taught N. C. Wyeth and others, shaping the golden age of American illustration and adventure fantasy.
