Theodor Hertzka (1845–1924) was an Austro-Hungarian economist whose novel Freeland: A Social Anticipation (1890) laid out, in careful economic detail, a liberal cooperative utopia founded in the African highlands. So persuasive that it inspired real (if short-lived) ‘Freeland’ colonisation movements, it stands among the notable economic utopias in the tradition of Bellamy and Morris.
