William Bowen (1877–1937) was an attorney who wrote a handful of children’s books in the 1920s, of which The Old Tobacco Shop (1921), a boy’s fantastical adventure, was named one of the first-ever Newbery Honor books in 1922. Later based in Los Angeles, he served as an attorney for the 1932 Summer Olympics. A gentle, whimsical voice of early American children’s fantasy.
